The wines of the land of Colleoni

Located in the area between lake Como and lake Iseo in the province of Bergamo, in the region of Lombardy, Valcalepio’s vine-growing history goes back to the Roman times. As a land rich in traditions, Valcalepio has as its emblem the image of its famous local leader: Bartolomeo Colleoni.
The vineyards are found exclusively on the hills around the city of Bergamo, where they find the best south exposition and soil conditions, on an overall area of 1500 hectares.
In 1974 the Cantina Sociale Bergamasca obtained the recognition of the Valcalepio Appellation (DOC Valcalepio) and decided to plant, after a period of experimentation, internationals recognized varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot – the basis for centuries of wines of excellent quality and consistency. Both Cabernet and Merlot have adapted nicely in the hills around Bergamo, an ideal area to best maximised their own characteristics. Next to them a selection of native vines have been preserved representing today the historical heritage of the region.
The initial appellation allowed for the production of two wines: Valcalepio Rosso, a “Bordeaux-style” blend, and Valcalepio Bianco, a blend of Pinot Bianco, Pinot Grigio and Chardonnay. In 1993 two more wines were introduced: Valcalepio Rosso Riserva which has a minimum aging of 3 years, at least one spent in wood and Valcalepio Moscato Passito, which is made from the autochthonous variety Moscato di Scanzo.
